With his donation of 150 books, Anson helped found the Friends Historical Library at Swarthmore College in 1871. From the Friends Historical Library website:
Friends Historical Library was established in 1871, two years after Swarthmore college opened its doors, when Anson Lapham donated 150 volumes of Quaker books for a small library “exclusively for matters pertaining to Friends.”
Anson Lapham was a cousin of Susan B. Anthony. From the Life and Work of Susan B. Anthony (Volume 1):
In October the dear cousin Anson Lapham passed away, and in the diary that night was written: “No man except my father ever gave me such love and confidence, and his acts were equal to his faith.”
By which she means he was really rich and contributed a lot of money to women’s suffrage. I wonder what other Ansons have been involved with Swarthmore.
